Our motorbikes had
been left in our really nice little guest house in Addis Ababa, along with all
our motor biking gear. I was very excited as the relay was passed from Marc and
Suz to Jo, who was coming out for a three week mission around Ethiopia with
me.

I picked Jo up from the airport and we
headed back to our guest house. We chilled out and spent a few days hanging out,
eating and drinking until Marc and Suzi flew home. After a few lazy days we
booked onto the luxury “Salam” bus north to the lake side town of Bhar Dhir. For
once the bus actually lived up to the hype, having a toilet and serving snacks
for free. On the bus we met
Michael the straight talking and funny Londoner. He´s a big character and we
ended up crossing paths and travelling together a lot. We arrived in the
lakeside town of Bhar Dhir and stayed in our weathered hotel for a couple days.
Whilst there we took a mini bus and checked out the Blue Nile falls as they
leave the huge Lake Tana. They were very impressive but a lot of the sting has
been taken away with the development of the new hydro electricity
plant.

After an interesting mini bus ride on our
private bus to the mountain town of Gondor, or so we were told! A pretty
standard Ethiopian promise of a private bus, (paying twice the price!) which
turned out to be a very public bus stacked to the gunnels with chat (a local
narcotic), kids and whatever else could be squeezed in. We chilled out here for
a day, checking out the 17th century castle or
mainly sleeping in the walled garden.

The next leg was what we
had been waiting for, trekking in the Simien mountains which reach a height of
4700m. We set off with our new Californian buddies (Blake and Lynette) on a
pretty cosy and dusty ride to the starting point and the park headquarter in
Debark. Once we arrived we organised a scout, some mules and a cook with the
minimum of fuss. Of course in true Ethiopian style there was a catch with the
huge fee to get transport in and out of the park. With some hard bargaining we
managed an ok deal but it was still a lot. All in all, the trek was super cheap,
costing 100 pounds for 5 days including superb food. Jo who was after a tan got
her wish and a bit more! My bargain Sudanese sun cream turned out to be
glorified moisturiser. With the altitude, the fierce sun blistered my fragile
Nordic nose and turned the young Jo black. The landscape was bizarre with us
following a huge escarpment with a path weaving along the edge with constant
sheer 1,000f drops, a base jumper´s paradise. The top of the escarpment was a
high plateau with rolling hills not dissimilar to the mountains of mid Wales.
On these high plains massive troops of grazing baboons sat eating with their
red chest bums and there crazy Afro´s. We spend Christmas Eve on the mountain
and I was spoilt rotten, having my first stocking ages J So I got lots of
chocolate, a santa hat, Jelly beans and a very comprehensive wilderness first
aid book which came in very useful the very next day helping a young girl with a
very bad skin condition. After our very interesting Christmas day spent in the
back of a pickup and a local bus that was a moving sauna packed wall to wall
with quite smelly locals.

Back in Gondor we had booked some really cheap
internals flights as travel within Ethiopia can be very time consuming as apart
from the main Chinese built highways, the roads are shocking! So we headed to
the Mekele in the NE of the country on our lovely new Ethiopian airline plane.
We met up with our good friend Michael and Yohanis the South African who was on
the case sorting out prices for a trip to the infamous Danakil depression. Next
day we were off on a big adventure in a convoy of 10 Toyota Land Cruisers to one
of the most inhospitable places on earth. The road winded its way down and down
through dramatic folded volcanic landscape eventually arriving at the lowest
point on the African continent (-116m) and the village with the hottest average
temperature in the world. The Danakil is a place of quite a few records and is
often like another planet with only the “Afar” tribe living there, who are
renowned for their ferocious and fearless ways. On the way down the winding road
with switch back after switch back, we passed hundreds of camels laden with salt
blocks cut from the vast salt planes way below.

Next day we went on a magical mystery tour
stopping in at the local sights. The first of which was a volcano shaped
mountain topped with a moonscape of sulphurous formations spewing hot water from
deep below. All around was the hissing of water and alien like sculptures all in
very un-natural colours of vivid yellows, toxic greens and brilliant white.
After a short drive we drove to a salt cave and a walk through some very
delicate looking salt formations. We then drove to a huge hole in the desert
floor about 100m wide which was full of bubbling orange brown water. All around
were open holes of vary sizes all bubbling away like a pan on the stove. Last
visit of the day was to the vast salt planes to see where the local “Afar” eke
out a living chopping blocks of salt like they have been doing for many
centuries to sell in the local markets at Mekele. After another decidedly
average carbohydrate loaded meal we settled into our beds lined up outside
looking up at the huge desert skies counting shooting stars as we slowly drifted
to sleep.

Next morning we had an 8 hour drive through
one of the worst roads (or a path through the wilderness) in the world. We shot
off at break neck speed through deep powdery sand, dry river beds, open planes
but mainly sand that enveloped everything in our 20 year old vehicle. When we
stopped our vehicle reminded me of that mates house were you wipe your feet on
the way out! We were covered in a thick layer of dust, others had the luck of a
new air-conditioned vehicle but Jo, Michael and I definitely were rocking the
desert look. The last part of the drive was on pure rock from the previous
eruptions of the volcano we would spend New Year’s Eve on. This is one of the
only permanent lava pooled craters in the world and has been in a permanent
state of eruption for the last 100 years. So after crawling and bumping our way
over the sharp path along the volcanic rock our convoy arrived at the base camp
from where we would walk to the summit in the night. After another stodge fest
dinner we all left for the 3 hour walk to the summit. We took our time and
meandered our way up and when we finally crested the rim we could see the lava
creating an orange glow, occasionally lighting up the sky looking like some kind
of missile attack! Eager to get up close we scrambled down the rim onto the old
lava crater in which the much smaller active crater sits in. The surface was
brittle and crunchy underfoot, like a cross between shiny coal and wind affected
hard snow. The surface was in layers reminding me of chocolate ripples on a cake
and occasionally a foot would fall through the void to the next layer down. All
around you could feel the heat emanating from deep below. When we got to the
edge of the actual lava pool I was instantly speechless with some people talking
to me and I was like a kid glued to the TV, in one ear and out of the other. The
crater was about 200m wide with a bubbling epicentre that moved around and would
occasionally erupt into and angry column of spewing lava, belching out a cloud
of noxious gas that burned your eyes and lungs if you got too close. Michael was
walking around like a shell shocked soldier cracking me and Jo up, calling it
the devils eye! It really was almost overwhelming to see such awesome, raw power
and I´ve never seen anything that has made me feel like that before. We settled
in and got used to our surrounding sitting back from the crater on the warm
ground chugging local wine as we counted the New Year in, one to remember that
is for sure. Next morning we had a miserable hung over walk down and an epic drive
back to Mekele.

We spent our last day in the Tigre area
around Mekele checking out some of the infamous rock hewn churches. The most
interesting one involved some pretty tricky rock climbing moves and a final
shuffle along a small ledge with the exposure of a 200m drop! The time Jo and I
had, had flown by and it was time for her to leave so we flew back to Addis. Our
Danakil cooks hygiene practices had left us very, very ill indeed. Our last
romantic evening was spent tag teaming the toilet with a very unpleasant chorus
being played! Poor old Jo got on the plane and feeling terrible and only just
made it back home in one piece. That night team Austro/Germany arrived back and
the mission south to the road from hell was on.

the end of our trip

http://321offroad.weebly.com/blog/the-end-of-our-trip

http://321offroad.weebly.com/blog/the-end-of-our-trip#comments

Uncategorized

Now it is here, the end of our trip! Proudly, exhausted and happy at the same time, we look back at 7 months of adventure. Unbelievable we managed the whole trip without any bigger problems. If we think of the millions of situations where we found ourselves almost getting hit by idiot drivers or what could have happend mechanical wise to our bikes during this almost 18.000km, we can truly say we are lucky!
Also our big worry, to get the bikes home safely, worked out just perfect in the end. But to make that work out is the story of our last 2 weeks.

After beautiful Zanzibar we swing back on our bikes and cross the last boarder of our trip. We have in our mind that the way to Mombasa should be our last kilometers together. It is boiling hot and things don't work out like usual. Marc's bike gets louder and louder, something is wrong with his exhaust. His board tools fall out while he is driving, get caught in the tire frame and end up lying all over the street. In the meantime Marianne's backpack happily melts with its interior over my exhaust and my indicator breaks of without doing anything to it. That is definitely not what we expect for this last trip. At least the border crossing works out quite well.
This time we don't have to pay anything, not even for our visa for Kenya, it is still valid. Only Marianne's isn't anymore, cause the people at the airport gave here the wrong one.
Marc uses the waiting time for fixing his exhaust with an old can of coke, which doesn't last long, but is indeed very creative!

It gets dark quiet fast and we don't manage to reach Mombasa on time, so we stop at a guesthouse which is, as so often on this trip, pretty shit! Heyho it is cheap!

Early in the morning we drive into Mombasa to find a place to stay.
It is never easy to find something decent in big cities, but this time it is particully hard. It takes us more than one hour in full gear and over 30° to find out that the address shown in the internet is wrong. A wee bit pissed off we finally find it. There is pool, free wireless lan (if there is no power cut), cheap good food with big portions and really nice people hanging out.
So our next days are a mixture of food, internet, pool, funny conversations and a hell of a lot of phoning people who pretend to know something about cargo. I talk to way too many people and after some days I am pretty sure I could do their job way better than they do.

Every time I want an offer which includes all costs of the shipping and every time, really every time, it is wrong, but not wrong in a rip of way, it is just purely wrong! Information wrong, price wrong, everything wrong! I get pretty frustrated and all signs point to Nairobi, so we make a decision: Drive to Nairobi!

This time we are no more 4 bikes, we are just 3. Marianne sells her bike to Romain, who is super happy to have now his own bike.
Old 321offroad crew is back on the road! It is amazing how our African driving skills developed. Now we drive like total idiots, wave in and out everywhere, overtake other drivers while they overtake, use sidewalks with a speed of 80 km/h or more to overtake inside or if the overtaking gets too close then on the other side. Sometimes 2 of us overtake one truck at the same time but at different sides. We will get so many tickets back home...

In Nairobi we meet Fabian, who is finally our man. He knows literally everything about airfreight! We get a really good deal (with the official prices from swiss air). We also find a perfect solution for palletizing our bikes, no wood which has to be fumigated and is on the same hand ridiculous expensive. We get our bikes, drained, cleaned, put apart and packed in steel-boxes for less than 30€.

On Monday the bikes reach at the airport, paperwork is done, all good!

Now it is time to say Good bye. Good bye Marianne, Good bye Tam, Good bye Africa! It is good and bad at the same time. GOOD because quiet often Africa is very exhausting and being dirty as well, SAD because now our big adventure is over, we come back as student, instructor, chef and teacher again. There is nothing so special left. We take of our last items which identify us with our trip, our heavy boots and our helmets, that's it... 321offroad!

P.S. Already searching for some new adventure! ;)

home sweet home

http://321offroad.weebly.com/blog/home-sweet-home

http://321offroad.weebly.com/blog/home-sweet-home#comments

Uncategorized

as all good things must come to an end, this one did as well.we can tell you that marianne is now in styria, tam in london and susi and me, we are back in innsbruck. we just shortly wanted to tell you these news and of course, we will write a final blog entry how it all worked out with the motorbikes in the end and so on. Saying bye to Lina and Chris is harder than expected, but we promise to meet up again in Innsbruck! 40HP are enough to shorten the crossing to 1,5h and to make it really enjoyable. We can see Malins jumping out of the water and diving through under the boat. Back on the mainland we pack our things and we head off to Mombasa. Just on the way Lucifer’s whole indicator breaks because of the vibration. Diablo sounds strange today, backfires way more than usual and he’s getting to hot. It doesn’t take us long to find the reason. Air gets out between the front part of the exhaust and the middle part. The graphite sealing is broken. The temporary fixing with a cola can are not successful. Marianne’s backpack on Susis rack melts to Susis exhaust. I lose my tool bag which wraps itself around the tire. Buzi’s chain is stretching from day to day like a piece of rubber. It is time for the bikes to get into the container!
The street I have chosen to leave the city is maybe not the best decision. A brilliant start for Mariannes first African Motorbike experience, a million of people on the street, huge piles of soil on the street, we have to drive over two filthy Blackwater Canals on structurally questionable Corrugated -Iron -Bridges and last but not least the “Tarmac” becomes a very small, sometimes quiet steep, dirt road. Sorry, that was my fault!

On the way to the lodge we suddenly see a group of zebras. Fascinated we stop and watch these beautiful animals. These wouldn’t be the only ones we saw that day, our whole camp is surrounded by heaps of different wild animals. Marc is taking a lot of photos and everyone can see, he is now super happy that he finally brought his SRL on the trip. I have to admit the photos are really good!

Various antelopes, Zebras, wilder beast and a turtle make our ride to a fantastic nature experience. Also the streets become more and more “natural”. From smooth tarmac, to tarmac with potholes, to potholes with little Tarmac, to gravel, to washed out dirt road with river crossing and finally rock planes... the absolute off road heaven! It is fantastic to see and feel how the bikes make up their way no matter which surface we are on. It is so much fun! Also Buzi (Tam´s taken to calling her pussy!), Marianne’s 200cc Chinese bike, is doing more than well, but we can probably bring that back to Marianne’s long year off road experience. ;)

_We decide not to enter the National park. 80$ a day per person plus transport plus guide is a bit too much for our Gyppo budget. Finally I am back! First goal is Jinja, the place where everyone pays for near death drowning experiences. So did we! But all of us survive, almost physically unharmed. Out of a plan of a 2 or 3 days stay, we stay 6 days. It is so nice here. Finally we hit the road and head to Kampala where Ali lets us stay in his house. And not just that, he feeds and entertains us and even give us his bed, where else he sleeps on a mattress on the floor.

Wir fahren über die Grenze nach Uganda. Endlich wieder in Uganda!

_Now it is time for me to go back to Zigoti, the main reason why I went on this trip to Africa. We’re doing quite good today. 420km and one flat tire at Lucifer. After a couple of minutes Susi has to stop she is surrounded by people. Some minutes later there are more than 50 people standing around us as close as possible and giving me hardly no space to breathe and of course no space to change the tire. Luckily there is one local with a big stick, pushing the people back. What a Nut. Easy to guess that he wants to have some money for that afterwards.
We get the information that there have been fights on the street we want to take tomorrow. We speak to somebody who came from this direction. He got stacked for four days on the street. Hearing these news feels like a punch into the stomach. There are no alternatives, Marianne’s flight is booked already and driving through that area seems to be quite stupid in my opinion. We decide to wait for one more day and ask the officials at the border for the latest news. We get to know Peter and Jenny, also on the way to Kenya with a Landcruiser Prado. We want to build a convoy for the dodgy parts.
The border crossing activities are done quite fast, the officials are totally friendly. We take a hotel and decide to drive off early in the morning the next day to make the 250km of dirt road together with Peter and Jenny. In the evening Susi realizes that we forgot to fill up our fuel tanks. We’re now on the street for over 13.000km and doing still these beginner mistakes. So we go - together with two locals – to search for some petrol which is rare because of the fights over the last days. We find ourselves again in a dark backyard and I just think by myself “if my Mom just told me one thing it is not to go with foreign people around dark corners”. The road today is again offroad deluxe and corrugated as far as we can see. In the evening we will be well shaken, not stirred. After 120km the streets becomes perfect. Brand new tarmac. We’re happy to heve better underground again. Then suddenly we can see an elephant. I get my camera out. He crosses the street 50m ahead and it looks really majestic. The first “real” elephant I have seen in my life. We saw a lot of animals in the last few days. Gazelles, monkeys and funny birds as well. We sit in the hotel’s garden. In the afternoon we head off to Nairobi. On the way we get some rain; the first time since turkey. It’s not much, but it feels quite familiar. After heavy stupid traffic on the motorway which remembers us strongly of Egypt. Susis navigation skills bring us directly to our destiny today the Jungle Junction. We enter the courtyard. No power, loads of dirt coming out of the exhaust and she overheats as well. Driving gets really exhausting when your bike just doesn’t run right. My range drops from about 400km to less than 200km and in Ethiopia it is practically hard to find petrol. Almost every station sends you away, next village in 100km. Nice! We find one which sells petrol, but first we have to go to an office and apply for the amount of petrol we need. It takes us ages to find that, but half an hour later we get 30l of petrol. But we don’t know that this is the last we get before Addis which is still 290km ahead of us. We try to save petrol wherever we can, so we turn off our engines and roll silently down every hill. About 80km before Addis I am on my reserve so I use my last 6l out of Tam’s canisters. Tam follows with turning to his reserve and then Marc joins the club. Since Luzifer is drinking like and alcoholic my 6l were also burned in no time. So 3 desperate bikers searching now for petrol. Tam stops at a Chinese borehole and can buy 4 liters for a not too bad price. We don’t need them. 10km later we finally find a petrol station. We really managed it to Addis Ababa!

Immediately you could feel that the atmosphere was so much more relaxed and the people were also much more subdued. Straight away you could also see that we were one step closer to “real Africa”, as the skin colour around ranged from the lighter tones of North Africa to rich black of central Africa. There was still the slight inability to queue at the customs door but once inside the officials were super friendly and did the half arsed checking of our bags in no time at all. Once outside we needed to change some us dollars and euro’s into Sudanese pounds as there are no ATM that accept foreign cards in the whole of Sudan. We Jump onto our minibus and pay the fixed price of 5 Sudanese pounds to get the few kilometers into the town and our new hotel or “Locanda,” which will be our home for the next few days. At 1.50 euro’s it’s a bit of a bargain, the shower is a bucket but it’s clean and it has a bed.

I’m staying with our new French friend Ben and Susi and Marc share a room. Quite often when we are having dinner at our amazingly good local restaurant we talk about the hierarchy of overland travel. At the bottom rung of the ladder you have the tramps like Ben who is walking a good chunk of the Nubian Desert. Then you have the cyclists, who are the working class heroes who can take very few creature comforts. We are the boring middle class, superseded by the 4x4 upper class with their AC, fridges, more than 3 pairs of pants and roof tents. The real aristocracy of the whole system are the over land trucks kitted out with showers, hot running water and all the creature comforts of a house. So whilst waiting in Wadi Halfa for the motorbikes to arrive, we mix with most of the spectrum from the class system, as it’s the only crossing point into Egypt and the NE of Africa. One group is a sponsored South African team driving 3 brand new VW Amarok 4x4 which I have never seen before. They fill us in on the 300km route through the Nubian Desert following a disused railway and tell us that its easy riding and we should manage at least 80km per hour. We are sold and decide to go for it and we will fit our desert tires when the bikes arrive. Lesson learned, never trust advice from the upper class!

Four days after arriving we are getting a little concerned as the bikes still haven’t turned up and the next two days (Fri and Sat) would be the Sudanese weekend. Mr Mezir, our mandatory paper work fixer, called us late on Thurs telling us to get ourselves to the port, pronto, so we can unload our bikes and get through customs with no expensive overtime. Mission accomplished, bikes came off with no bribes to pay and customs were a doddle. Next day the 1 hour job of swapping our tires around turned into a 3 hour epic, as ours are extremely stiff and are notoriously difficult to fit. Prepped with 500km of fuel for normal riding, lots of water and food, it was time to take on our first bike offroad challenge.

The road into the desert starts pretty firm but in not too long it deteriorates and becomes deep rutted sand. Our path ahead cuts straight through the desert with nothing but 8 derelict train stations, some gold and a shit load of sand. The first day we travel 110 km in 7 hours of riding with an hour lost for changing a flat tire on chardonnay. This was a bit of a school boy error on my part as I had dropped the pressure in my tires to get a bigger footprint in the soft sand but had done it a bit too much. What occurs is a phenomenon known as tire creep were the tire spins on the rim but the inner tube stays were it is, snapping the valve off! I had another spare one with me but had trashed the one in the wheel (although I know now valves can be bodged up, sorry Sus). That was the hardest day of riding with most of the way being in deep rutted sand that had a tendency to chuck you off or more to the point me, 6 times! I blame chardonnay for having such a fat arse but the other may disagree and blame it on my ropey technique, sketchy counts. When we did look for another route away from the dreaded ruts, we just crawled along spewing out a huge plume of sand from the spinning rear wheel. On one occasion Susi went on a recci for an easier root looking for a firmer path and hit a particular soft patch and buried Luzifer up to her swing arm. That night we camped next to one of the old train stations, thoroughly exhausted we watched another amazing sunset, cooked dinner and sat around a little camp fire with a sky full of stars. I’m sure we were all thinking the same and this was the exactly reason we had come away and this was exactly the little scenario you dream about in your head.

The next day we got up early and struggled to pull off in the deep powdery sand. Before long the desert changed and became deep with no ruts. This stuff was amazing and it reminded me of the amazing feeling of floating in deep powder snow on skis. You could point the bike with plenty of throttle and it literally just floated along. Keeping nice and loose with weight slightly back we could cruise up to 70km. I knew the bike was working hard as the engine ran consistently at the highest temperature it runs at and you had to give it lots of throttle every now and then when you could feel a particularly soft patch of sand suddenly suck the power from the rear wheel. We were starting to worry as our 500km of normal fuel range was getting drunk by the bikes at an alarming rate. We were very relieved when one of the deserted train stations was actually a restocking center with petrol, food and a bore hole with fresh water. After sharing some of our dates with the locals and topping up with fuel we established that it was to service the gold miner in the area, all trying to make it rich and break out of poverty. After an amazing beef kebab stew and bean foul it was back into the saddle for another 100km until we set our tents up in one of the disused railway buildings.

Next morning we set off blasting through miles of soft flat sand, riding three abreast, all with our own trail of dust billowing from our knobbly rear tires. All was great until chardonnay started to feel a bit more loose and squirmy than normal. I very quickly realized I had another flat tire. So we went through the normal rig moral of getting the tire off and were quite relieved to find that it was only a puncture and the valve in my remaining tube was intact. It turns out that the young fella who had repaired the pinch puncture (he had put in the tube whilst fitting the tire) had only just covered it with the patch. At an agreed rate of 1 Sudanese pound per hour Susi had the unenviable job of picking the old patch away. With the tube fixed we made good progress to Abu Hamad and refueled and ate a nice chunky lunch of the Sudanese staple, foul (mushed up beans and oil) and bread.

That night it started to get dark and we had another 70km to go before the next village with a locanda. As a democracy the other two voted to pull off the road and see if we could stay in the small village. I wasn’t that keen as I thought it would be headwork and the whole village would turn out and we’d be in one of those really knackering situations. As it turns out it was an amazing and our host were a pair of legends. We were shown to our own private mud house where we all had a bed, somewhere to park the bikes, water to wash with and lots of sweet chai. We were woken before sunrise by the door being shoved open and our host lighting an open fire in the middle of the room. Pretty quick way of getting 3 westerners out of bed is to smoke em out! He then proceeded to roast fresh coffee beans, grind them buy hand and brew the coffee on a charcoal fire. After a shed load of coffee we all speedily packed up our bikes and headed off down the road feeling properly wired and a bit sketchy.

We arrived at Atbara and spent a night and afternoon just relaxing and looking to make our way south to Khartoum rested. Next morning the unthinkable happened, my last tube lost the valve when the tire deflated. Out of pure luck this happened right outside of one of the many tire shacks dotted all over Sudan and the rest of Africa, I suspect. I had sworn to Sus that a valve snapping off was terminal for the tube but to my surprise the guy simply sandwiched a new valve in the hole and repaired the hole in the tube with some old inner tube and rubber glue. Bam job done and all in all, it cost 1 euro! We carried on south to Shendi and spent a couple of days doing routine maintenance on the bikes. This included cleaning chains, washing our foam air filter in petrol and re oiling them after the severe clogging they had taken in the desert and general tweaks usually involving duct tape, zips ties or jubilee clips.

New photos (by felix)

http://321offroad.weebly.com/blog/new-photos

http://321offroad.weebly.com/blog/new-photos#comments

Uncategorized

I have uploaded the most recent photos from Sudan and Egypt.

_ Not very happy we make our way to the Nile navigation office to book the tickets for us and our bikes. If this is the case we have to stay at least 2 weeks in Aswan (not one) and I can truly say Aswan is a shithole. The city is (besides the main road) quite dirty and the constant honking orchestra does the rest. Most restaurants charge double the price for tourists, the phrases shop assistance use to get you to buy something get more and more stupid. If you walk along the Nile it is impossible to have a normal conversations, even to finish one sentence, you will be interrupted by hundreds of boat owners who try to sell an overpriced boat trip. There are no No goes they wouldn’t use. Public ferry doesn’t work, they tell you all sorts of lies and that is so tiring!
